1. TAKE MEASUREMENTS OF YOUR PROPERTY

This is important for selecting landscape elements that are proportionate to the space intended. In addition to knowing the physical space allowed, make note of any elevation changes and drainage areas.

2. NOTE THE SUN AND SHADE PATTERNS

Plant selection and gathering spaces are very dependent on this step.

3. SELECT YOUR DESIRED PLANT AND MATERIAL PALETTE

Knowing what elements will be used in your project before beginning the design, helps streamline the process and create a general style guideline from which to work.

4. CHOOSE YOUR DESIGN PROGRAM

While there are many great options throughout the spectrum, from AutoCad to app-based programs on your cell phone, Sketchup is probably one of the best free options out there. With a library of plants and elements, you’ll be able to download and create a beautiful plan! Youtube is a great place to go for tips on how to use the program if you get stuck.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO START OVER

Create some different options for yourself! A few minutes of redesign is much easier to deal with than regret after it’s all been installed.
